Without Them, the U.S. Faces Economic Chaos

America is facing an economic and political crisis that could jeopardize economic growth, caused by a sharp decline in fertility.

The number of babies born in the U.S. last year was the lowest in more than 40 years, according to figures released in May by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

U.S. women had about 3.61 million babies in 2020, down 4 percent from the prior year. The total fertility rate — the average number of babies a woman would have over her lifetime — fell to 1.64, well below the level of 2.1 that is needed for population levels to remain constant.

That was the lowest rate on record since the government began tracking it in the 1930s.

The consequences of this trend if it continues, experts warn, will be:

• Slower economic growth
• Higher labor costs caused by a shortage of workers
• Less funding for schools and colleges
• More pressure on health and pension systems
• More resources and time diverted to eldercare

Demographers say social and economic shifts are driving down fertility.
